The two types are not interchangeable, so it is important to match the shifter style to your riding discipline before making a purchase. Choosing the wrong type can result in compatibility issues with your derailleurs and overall drivetrain setup.

Compatibility comes down to a few key factors: the brand of your groupset, the number of speeds in your drivetrain, and the type of derailleur you are running. Most shifters are designed to work within a specific brand ecosystem and speed range, so mixing components from different manufacturers can cause shifting problems. If you are unsure, checking your current groupset details and matching them to the shifter specifications is the safest approach.

If your shifter is worn or damaged but the rest of your drivetrain is in good condition, replacing just the shifter is often the most cost-effective option. However, if you are looking to move to a higher-performance shifting system, it is worth checking whether your derailleurs, cassette, and chain can support the upgrade. Upgrading components in isolation can sometimes limit the performance gains you would otherwise get from a full groupset change.
